Have you ever travelled to Amsterdam, you can see cyclists everywhere, they have mothers with place where babies can comfortably sit and they go around. They have dedicated multi-storey parking for cycles 🚲 and also you can rent them too.

It’s good to see that some initiatives are been taken too like Bangalore just got its very first green crossing for cyclists, on the lines of zebra crossing for pedestrians. It’s time to get cycling again!

Over the past year or so, cycling has attained immense popularity across the city, with several taking it up as a hobby, fitness activity or as an eco-friendly means of commuting. With the rise in cyclists, the city has also amped up its infrastructure for the cycling community with features like cycling lanes and more. Coming as welcome news to cycling enthusiasts, Bangalore has just added to its cycling-oriented features – the city got its first-ever green crossing. Much like a zebra crossing for pedestrians, the green crossing is intended to serve the same purpose for cyclists, helping them cross cycle tracks while alerting vehicles about approaching cyclists.

While the first green crossing has come up at Sankey Road, there will be more introduced across the city, near the cycle tracks. A citizen-driven venture, the green cross continues the cycle track across the junctions. Furthermore, cyclists also got ramps at junctions, making it easier for them to access the cycle tracks. Bangalore Bicycle Mayor, Sathya Sankaran said, “We had identified flaws in the cycle track implementation that rendered it partly dysfunctional. For example, during our previous audits, we found that the entry to the bicycle lane did not have ramps and lane continuity across the junction was missing. Hence, we reached out to the Smart City officials and worked with them to fix it.” With more and more people taking up the activity, these infrastructural features are sure to help build an active cycling community in the ooru!
