Did You Know: World’s Tallest Ganesh Statue is not in India
India is home to some of the world’s wealthiest temples, tallest statues and highest structures. The world’s second most populous country has been in the global media spotlight for erecting grand statues, including the world’s tallest Ram statue in Ayodhya, the world’s Shiva statue in Rajasthan, the world’s tallest Shiva Lingam in Kerala, and the world’s tallest Hanuman statue in Karnataka.
Ganesh Chaturthi is famous in Mumbai, you can see some famous pandals like Lal Bagh Ka Raj, Andheri Ka Raja to name a few which have big Ganesh statues.
But what you may not know is that the world’s tallest statue of Lord Ganesh is not in India.
Thailand houses the world’s two tallest Ganesh statues; one is seated and the other is standing. Located in Khlong Khuean Ganesh International Park in Chachoengsao province, the standing Ganesh statue is 39-meter (128 feet) high. Made of 854 pieces of bronze parts, the larger-than-life statue was installed by Thai Princess Soamsawali Phravararajatinuddamat, in spite of a protest by Thai liberals. Located at Wat Phrong Akat in Chachoengsao, the seated Ganesh statue is another spiritual wonder. It is 49 meters (161 feet) high and 19 meters wide.
Lord Ganesh is as revered by Thai Buddhists as by Indian Hindus all over the world. Thai Buddhists worship Lord Ganesh as Phra Phikanet (Shri Vignesha), the remover of obstacles and the giver of prosperity. The Ganesh Chaturthi celebration is as grand in Thailand’s Chachoengsao province as it is India. The logo of Thailand’s department of Fine Arts features Ganesh. Chachoengsao province is a must visit for another attraction – a 22-meter long and 16-meter high reclining Ganesh statue. On the occasion of Ganesh Chaturthi, huge idols are temporarily set up in every nook and corner of Chachoengsao.
