Flamingo Watching

Writer's picture: Swetha JainSwetha Jain

It has been decided to use the temporary bridge constructed alongside the Mumbai Transharbour link as a platform where people can spend their time watching flamingoes.

What’s the Mumbai Trans Harbor Link you ask? It’s a colossal sea bridge that is being made to connect the Island City to Navi Mumbai and parts of Raigad district.

Curious as to why this spot has been the chosen one for the bird-watching idea? It’s because the Sewri mudflats are a habitat for the flamingo birds. People can barely sight birds from Sewri fort or the Sewri jetty because construction machinery and ship repair firms have taken over those areas.

Doubling up this temporary structure to serve a different purpose has received thumbs up from a lot of commoners and top officials, and also has a lot of plus to it.

It has been observed that the MTHL work hasn’t disturbed the movement of flamingoes and other birds much, which means not just flamingoes but also a lot of other birds could be seen flocking to the area, making it a good bird-watching spot.
