After two decades of tourism economy lying deep in hibernation, Jammu & Kashmir – the crown of India – is rising from the state of anarchy and apathy. Dal Lake and Chinar trees are slowly coming back to life. There is serenity in the air. Accelerating the pace of resurrection is Sheikh ul-Alam International Airport in Srinagar, the gateway to the northernmost region. Foreign tourists will get direct access to Jammu & Kashmir as the Civil Aviation Minister granted permission to operate flights from and to Srinagar International Airport. The first international flight will take off from Srinagar for the UAE in a month.

One of the most scenic airports in India, Srinagar is set to become an international destination for foreign tourists and business travelers. The airport expansion plans are underway as Rs 1500 crore has been allocated for infrastructure development. The terminal will be expanded from 25,000 square meters to a whopping 63,000 square meters. A premium lounge is among the planned upgrades to the existing infrastructure. With the bounty of nature and scenic landscape, Kashmir has tremendous potential for business and leisure tourism. Jammu Airport is also in the spotlight of development as Rs. 600 crore has been allocated for upgrading the airport.

Once both airports are ready to handle an influx of foreign arrivals, international tourists won’t need to transit in Delhi or Mumbai en route to Kashmir.
