Despite recent reports doubting the sovereignty of Khardung La as the highest motorable road, this idyllic mountain pass located in Ladakh continues to charm road trip enthusiasts and hardcore bikers. Opened to public in 1988, Khardung La is now a part of pop culture and a constant pull for travellers, who prefer to break free from the ‘safety’ of itinerary-driven trips. At a staggering height of 18,380 ft, Khardung La is all you need to satiate the adventure junkie in you. Elevation of the new highest motorable pass in the world: over 19,300 feet.
It stretches up to 86 km and connects Chisumle and Demchok villages, located 230 Kms from Leh.
The temperature at the pass ranges from around minus 10-20 degrees Celsius in summers to minus 40 degrees in winters.
Oxygen level at the pass is approximately 50 percent lesser than other places.
